The Greatest Silence

The Greatest Silence:Rape In The Congo

If you haven't seen it. See it.

I blogged about this several years ago, but no one was really paying attention then. No one really cares about violence unless it affects them directly.

No one really cares about anything unless it affects them directly... but that's just my cynical take on things.

I don't have HBO, but hopefully I can find the documentary elsewhere.

It just debuted on HBO, but I'm sure you could download it somewhere and it will probably be on video in a few months.

They actually talk on film to a Dr. Mukengere with whom I corresponded for a little while. I was trying to see what I could do for the hospital where he works, Panzi Hospital, which is the only one around for miles and miles. Some women have to walk for days and days to get there and this is after they've been gang raped and had their insides torn out with knives and guns being shoved inside them. I don't even have a word to describe how bad it is.

Yeah, that's what I'm figuring. Just about everything eventually ends up online.

Did Dr. Mukengere say if there was anything that could be done to help Panzi Hospital?

Basically, he just needs money mainly. That and some people who are qualified to volunteer there at the hospital. I didn't know this, but when I watched the documentary, I saw that they are building a new wing onto the hospital. I wonder if he has any more people to work. I think he pretty much lives there because he works so much. He's usually in surgery for most of the day every day.
