Do We Really Want The Truth?

Finally, there's a news website that is free and uses peer recommendation to effectively get their articles seen and read. This is reminiscent to me of underground Zines and political journals. It's something like my mom would have done when she was in college. To have reviewers like you and me writing our opinions on news that we think is important is huge. As it is now, even if you watch the major news channels on tv that claim to have "no spin", everything they say has "spin" or they bow to the wishes of whichever tycoon owns the station. That's not news. As for me, I want to know what's really going on in the world, not just the watered down, Americanized version of it. Or the alternative, the newscast where the tv journalist looks into the camera with a deadly calm and reads what he or she is told about the terrorists with the appropriate fear spin on it; enough to make most Americans want to give up their civil rights in order to feel safe. This is an age old question. My favorite professor in college even talked about it, but unfortunately I can't remember who she quoted, but I know it was a Greek philosopher. He said something to the effect of in times of war, people will willingly give up their freedoms for either real or imagined security. Is that what we've done? We live in an atmosphere of fear. I, for one, hate it.

There are so many questions that come up for me when watching or listening to news. Like what they say about Iraq. For instance, why is it that when the Iraqis attempt to show their extreme want of us to be out of their country and take drastic measures, they're called "insurgents", but the American soldiers, (No offense to them. Most of the people in the military are wonderful people. Unfortunately it's only the bad ones who make the news. That's another thing I have against the news agencies, but I won't get into it now.) who barge into Iraqi people's houses rape and kill. The ones who go into these little towns and basically destroy their whole infrastructure are called "heroes" by the American news. Why is that? If the tables were turned and the US were invaded by a foreign country, you can bet your bottom dollar that there would be an exceeding amount of "insurgent" activity. So what makes them so different from us? I have yet to figure it out.
